These India GK questions connect an answer to its source. Memorizing a date is easier when you know what happened on that date. The questions below focus on stable constitutional and national-symbol facts; they are not a guide to changing current affairs or exam-specific syllabi. Reviewed against the linked official texts on 2 October 2026.
When did the Constitution of India come into force?
Answer: 26 January 1950 for most provisions. Article 394 of the Constitution of India specifies that certain listed articles came into force at once and the remaining provisions came into force on 26 January 1950. This detail matters: “the Constitution began on one day in every respect” loses the exception written in the text.
Why is 26 January remembered as Republic Day?
Answer: it marks the commencement of the Constitution's main provisions and India's transition to a republic. The constitutional commencement date is the fact to remember. Do not confuse it with 15 August 1947, the date of independence, or 26 November 1949, the date associated with adoption of the Constitution. When an exam asks “adopted” versus “came into force,” read the verb carefully.
When was the present form of India's national flag adopted?
Answer: 22 July 1947. The National Portal of India states that the Constituent Assembly adopted the flag in its present form on that date. This predates independence on 15 August 1947. A date-only flashcard can hide this useful sequence.
How many spokes are in the Ashoka Chakra?
Answer: 24. The National Portal describes a navy-blue wheel in the center of the white band, with 24 spokes. Its design is based on the wheel depicted on the Sarnath Lion Capital of Ashoka. The Flag Code of India also describes 24 equally spaced spokes.
What is the flag's length-to-height ratio?
Answer: 3:2. The Flag Code describes a rectangular flag whose length to height is three to two. If a question reverses the order to height-to-length, the corresponding ratio is 2:3. State which dimension comes first rather than memorizing two apparently conflicting numbers.
Try a three-minute recall test
- Write “adopted” and “commenced” on separate lines. Put the relevant constitutional dates beside them.
- Sketch the flag's three horizontal bands and label the Chakra without looking.
- Explain the 3:2 ratio in words, then check the Flag Code.
